The government shutdown is not about keeping the lights on. It is about Democrats demanding more taxpayer-funded giveaways.

During a recent Republican Study Committee press call, RSC Chair August Pfluger and members Mark Alford and Brandon Gill made one point clear: House Republicans already did their job. They passed a clean, short-term continuing resolution to keep the government open without partisan riders or new spending. The Senate refused to act.

Why? Because Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are holding out for the same wasteful priorities that fueled inflation and expanded government dependency during COVID: supersized Obamacare subsidies, taxpayer-funded health care for illegal immigrants, and billions for left-wing pet projects like NPR and PBS.

As Rep. Mark Alford said, “It is day seven of America held hostage, the Schumer shutdown. And make no mistake, that’s exactly what it is—a Schumer shutdown. We did our job. We passed a clean, short-term continuing resolution to keep our government open.”

Republicans have made clear that Obamacare’s pandemic-era subsidy expansion, originally marketed as “temporary relief,” has turned into a permanent wealth transfer that rewards non-work and drives up health care costs. Democrats’ plan to extend these subsidies through 2025 would worsen inflation and encourage more government dependency at a time when Americans are struggling to afford groceries, gas, and housing.

Democrats are also tying these subsidies to new eligibility for illegal immigrants. Their proposal would let noncitizens access taxpayer-funded health care through Medicaid and ACA exchanges, policies that encourage illegal immigration and punish working Americans.

Rep. Brandon Gill said, “This is a hostage crisis that the Democrats have put us in right now. House Republicans passed a continuing resolution that is clean… something that they have voted on 13 times in the past, including this year. They rejected it because they want your hard-earned tax dollars to pay for health care for illegal aliens and to pay for state-sponsored media outlets like NPR and PBS.

“The American people aren’t stupid. They can see exactly what’s happened over the past several weeks. They can see that Democrats are holding the American people and the federal government hostage so that they can pursue unrelated policy goals that most Americans disagree with.”

This shutdown is not about budget math. It is about political leverage. Democrats would rather protect wasteful spending than accept current spending levels supported by a majority of Americans.

Republicans are standing firm for taxpayers, border security, and fiscal sanity. It’s time for Democrats to pass the clean CR and put Americans first.
