Sean O'Brien addressing the RNC.
Teamsters Union President Sean O’Brien is pushing President-elect Donald Trump to nominate former Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.) for Secretary of the Department of Labor, media reports indicate.
Chavez-DeRemer is a co-sponsor of the anti-worker “Protecting the Right to Organize” (PRO) Act, a bill that bans right-to-work laws nationwide, snuffs out independent contractors who want to be their own boss, and exacerbates union harassment of workers. The PRO Act is Big Labor’s biggest priority because its end goal is to shove all workers into unions.
O’Brien’s endorsement should mean nothing to any Republican. O’Brien is vociferously anti-Trump, and any DOL pick that has his blessing would be loyal to O’Brien alone, not the Trump worker freedom agenda.
Here are 3 ways O’Brien and the Teamsters have stabbed Trump in the back.
1. O’Brien Refused to Endorse Trump In A Primetime RNC Address
O’Brien asked to speak at the 2024 Republican National Convention, a request Trump granted in a show of good faith. In a post on Truth Social announcing his decision to accept O’Brien’s request, Trump said: “When I am back in the White House, the hardworking Teamsters, and all working Americans, will once again have a country they can afford to live in and be respected around the world.”
How did O’Brien repay Trump’s generosity? In a speech that evoked Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s most deranged tirades, O’Brien accused companies of committing “economic terrorism” and said that America’s largest companies “had no allegiance to America.”
Despite giving the longest speech of the RNC’s opening night, O’Brien pointedly refused to endorse Trump.
2. O’Brien Betrayed Rank-And-File Teamsters by Refusing To Endorse Trump
O’Brien polled Teamsters rank-and-file members on who he should endorse for president, saying that “Our members are the union, and their voices and opinions must be at the forefront of everything the Teamsters do.”
The results were striking: In an electronic poll, Trump beat Harris 59% – 34%. In a phone poll, Trump beat Harris 58% – 31%. Despite Trump’s overwhelming victory, O’Brien announced that the Teamsters would not be endorsing a candidate for president.
The fix was in from the start, as O’Brien rigged a double standard to ensure that Trump would never secure the Teamsters endorsement. According to the statement, the Teamsters declined to endorse Harris because she failed to earn “majority support” among the rank-and-file. Trump did earn “majority support,” but O’Brien chose to overrule his members because Trump failed to earn “universal support.”
3. The Teamsters Spent Millions Undermining Trump’s Second Term
The Teamsters spent $9 million on politics between 2019 and 2022, according to a report from the Center for Union Facts. Of that, 99% funded Democrat groups and anti-Trump media outlets. More than $2.6 million in Teamsters political donations went toward registered Democrats and Democratic campaign arms. The Teamsters also funded anti-Trump activist groups like the ACLU that plan to bury a second Trump term in litigation.
This should come as no surprise. When Trump was in office, the Teamsters worked to sabotage passage of the Trump Tax cuts and prevent confirmation of Trump’s Supreme Court picks. 94% of Teamsters political spending has gone to Democrats since 1990.
The Teamsters rank-and-file voted for Trump because he supports worker freedom. Trump supports right-to-work laws, which prevent employers from forcing employees into a union as a condition of employment. As president, Trump strengthened protections for independent contractors and franchises. Trump cut taxes across the board for American workers, and will cut taxes again with full control of the House and Senate.
Not only did O’Brien betray his members and refuse to endorse Trump, O’Brien and his cronies have spent handsomely to oppose the Trump agenda at every turn.
