Americans for Tax Reform strongly congratulates Governor Greg Gianforte on his re-election as Governor of Montana. Gianforte is a signer of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to Montana taxpayers that he will oppose and veto any and all efforts to raise state taxes.
In his first term, Governor Gianforte has been a strong steward of taxpayer dollars, simplifying Montana’s tax code from a seven-bracket system to just two, implementing the largest tax cut in state history, and leaving more money in Montanans’ pockets.
Due to the Governor’s $500 million permanent income tax cut and other reforms, Montana now ranks fifth best in the nation for overall tax climate.
“I congratulate Taxpayer Protection Pledge signer Greg Gianforte on winning the Montana gubernatorial race. Gianforte’s first term was filled with major wins for Montana taxpayers, and there’s no doubt his second term will follow the same path,” said ATR President Grover Norquist. “Montanans can rest easy knowing they have a strong taxpayer advocate in the governor’s mansion.”
Prior to serving as Governor of Montana, Gianforte signed and kept his “No New Taxes” pledge throughout his tenure in the U.S. House of Representatives and worked with President Trump to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs act.
Americans for Tax Reform offers the Pledge to all candidates for state and federal office. In addition to Governor Gianforte, 17 other sitting governors are signers of the Taxpayer Protection Pledge.
Americans for Tax Reform created the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in 1985 to solidify candidates’ commitments to taxpayers. President Reagan urged all candidates to sign the Pledge. He campaigned for and praised candidates who signed the Pledge. Today, over 1,400 elected officials and candidates on the federal and state levels are Taxpayer Protection Pledge signers.
