The tax bill introduced by the House Ways and Means Committee delivers on President Trump’s campaign promise to cut taxes all across the board for every income level.
It will not clobber small businesses with a Kamala Harris-inspired increase to the top tax rate.
“President Trump and Republican congressional leadership shut the door hard and repeatedly on an effort by a handful of White House staffers who tried to convince Trump to betray his repeated campaign promises to keep tax rates low for all Americans,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “The anonymous staffers wanted him to instead surrender to the Kamala Harris vision of allowing the top tax rate to drift upward, punishing job creators and self-employed Americans.”
The big beautiful tax cut bill will continue to cut income tax rates across the board and achieves President Trump’s campaign vow to do so, a vow repeated clearly during Trump’s March 4, 2025 address to congress:
“The next phase of our plan to deliver the greatest economy in history is for this congress to pass tax cuts for everybody,” Trump said. “We are seeking permanent income tax cuts all across the board.”
Progressives labeling themselves “populists” for weeks tried to convince President Trump to cast aside his campaign promise and adopt a tax hike invented by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris during their last year in office.
The idea was met with widespread conservative opposition. Mike Lee, Ted Cruz, Bernie Moreno, Speaker Johnson, Steve Scalise, Grover Norquist, Steve Moore, Larry Kudlow, Art Laffer, and radio hosts Sean Hannity, Hugh Hewitt, Lars Larson, Joe Pags, Ben Shapiro and many others spoke out against the tax hike trial balloon. 90 groups of pro-MAGA workers representing metal workers, roofers, farmers and manufacturers opposed the tax rate hike.
When elected officials violate campaign promises on taxes, voters revolt. Referencing the most famous instance, Trump has acknowledged that the George H.W. Bush “read my lips” broken promise was politically fatal. Trump said: “That was the end of him.“
