On September 8, New York socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani was interviewed by Al Sharpton on MSNBC. Mamdani said he will “ask” New Yorkers to pay higher taxes to fund his far-left policy plans.
During the interview Mamdani said:
“In part, by showing them that asking them to pay more in taxes would increase even their quality of life. Because when you ask New Yorkers what is it that is making them feel uneasy in this city, you often hear from them about the cleanliness of our city, the safety of our city, the affordability of our city. We are not asking to raise these taxes for the sake of it, we’re asking so that we can actually make the slowest buses in the country fast and free. So that we can actually create a Department of Community Safety that would deploy dedicated teams of mental health outreach workers to the top hundred stations with the highest levels of mental health crisis and homelessness. That relationship, proving that that tax dollar leads to that investment.”
Mamdani somehow believes “asking” millionaires to pay higher taxes means they will. But the facts say that his tax plans would make the city and state even more uncompetitive. New York is ranked 47th in the U-Haul growth index, which is the net-growth of U-Haul trucks moving into or out of the state. New York is ranked 49th in the Tax Foundation State Business Tax Climate Index and dead last in the Freedom in 50 States Index. Finally, New York is projected to lose two electoral votes in the 2030 census.
Zohran Mamdani either does not know, or does not care, that when taxes are raised, people leave. And with that they will not only not pay taxes to fund Mamdani’s socialist policies; they will take their charitable contributions to other towns and states. Mamdani will not simply ask, he will enforce. And his actions will lead to a mass exodus from New York City.
