Norquist: No Need to “Pay For” Extension of Trump Tax Cuts

Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist spoke at a 2025 tax cut panel on Monday.

Norquist said:

“We don’t ‘pay for’ present policy. This argument that some on the left are trying — to destroy the ability to keep taxes low — by saying ‘oh if you are going to do anything to re-up the tax cuts you have to go steal another $5 trillion someplace else. Which just kills the package.

So [Senate Finance Committee incoming Chairman Mike] Crapo said, look, we’re not paying for it. We didn’t when we extended the Bush tax cuts and that was when Obama was the President of the United States. We said, we are not paying for present policy. The other guys [the Left] like ‘present law’ because it all disappears and then they say ‘oh, now it’s all new.’ And the answer to that is NO.”
