Yesterday night, every House Democrat and 17 House Republicans voted to revive the expanded, COVID-era Obamacare subsidies that expired at the end of 2025.
The Republicans who voted to expand Obamacare – a disastrous law – are as follows:
Reps. Mike Carey (Ohio), Andrew Garbarino (N.Y.), Ryan Mackenzie (Pa.), Mike Lawler (N.Y.), Brian Fitzpatrick (Pa.), David Joyce (Ohio), Tom Kean (N.J.), Nick LaLota (N.Y.), Max Miller (Ohio), David Valadao (Calif.), Rob Wittman (Va.), Jeff Hurd (Colo.), Maria Elvira-Salazar (Fla.), Rob Bresnahan (Pa.), Derrick Van Orden (Wis.), Zach Nunn (Iowa), and Monica De La Cruz (Texas).
Grover Norquist, President of Americans for Tax Reform, today released the following statement regarding the vote:
“Seventeen House Republicans voted with all 213 Democrats to spend $80 billion over the next three years to revive the expanded, COVID-era Obamacare subsidies. Notably, with NO efforts made in the legislative text to address the newly-exposed rampant fraud in the program.
These 17 Republicans ran to news cameras to bluster about the $9 billion of fraud exposed in Minnesota. But, when it came time to actually protect taxpayers, they folded and voted with Democrats to fund 58,000 dead people on Obamacare exchanges and $27 billion worth of fraudulent, squandered taxpayer dollars – triple the amount stolen in Minnesota.
They voted to make healthcare more unaffordable. The only reason we’re in this position is because Obamacare has failed. It has radically increased premiums and lowered standards of care. Certainly, expanding it and keeping us on a path to more socialized healthcare will only make these problems worse.
Taxpayers should thank President Trump, Republican leadership, and the 196 House Republicans who said NO to expanding Obamacare and continuing fraudulent spending of taxpayer dollars.
Responsible, Republican lawmakers have put plans forward to actually lower costs and empower patients. Namely, expanding Health Savings Accounts, buttressing Health Sharing Ministries, codifying ICHRAs and Association Health Plans, slashing fraud, and more. If lawmakers wish to make healthcare more affordable and amenable to patients’ needs, they should support these efforts – not revive a failing and corrupt program.”
Americans for Tax Reform urges lawmakers to reject all efforts to expand Obamacare subsidies. Leaving these subsidies expired will lower costs to taxpayers, disincentive premium inflation, slash rampant fraud, and finally return to pre-COVID policy.
