In a win for taxpayers, North Carolina voters have passed a constitutional amendment to lower North Carolina’s income tax cap from 7.00 percent to 3.5 percent.

North Carolina’s flat income tax rate is already scheduled to fall from 3.99 percent to 3.5 percent on January 1, 2027. Passage of this amendment, which was referred to the ballot by legislators, means that all future proposals to raise the state income tax will require voter consent.
