Just this week, former Attorney General and current Michigan gubernatorial candidate Mike Cox reaffirmed his commitment to making the state more affordable. Speaking to Click on Detroit, Cox reiterated his support for abolishing the state income tax.

As Michigan Republicans hold the line against Democrats’ push for higher taxes and increased spending, having an ally in the Governor’s office will be key to making the state more affordable. Mike Cox has made his stance on this very clear. As the first, and currently only, Michigan gubernatorial candidate to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to oppose new and higher taxes, Mike Cox has demonstrated a clear commitment to protecting taxpayers and advancing policies that make Michigan a more affordable place to live, work, and invest.

In addition to lower taxes, Mike Cox is committed to making Michigan’s government more efficient and accountable. His platform calls for cutting red tape, streamlining licensing, and creating a more competitive environment for Michigan businesses. Cox has a proven record of delivering on these promises. As the state’s Attorney General, he reduced staffing by more than 20% while increasing the number of cases handled, demonstrating that government can do more with less under the right leadership.

Cox also recognizes that lowering costs for families and reducing tax burdens are key steps to moving Michigan in the right direction. As high-tax jurisdictions like California, New York, and New Jersey experience net migration out, low-tax jurisdictions like Idaho, South Carolina, and Florida have been experiencing population booms. Closer to home, Michigan’s neighbors are moving in the same direction. Both Ohio and Indiana have enacted significant tax cuts to improve their competitiveness and attract new investment, while Michigan risks falling behind if it fails to do the same. People are drawn to states where they have greater opportunities to succeed, keep more of what they earn, and build a better future without excessive government burdens.

Americans for Tax Reform applauds Mike Cox for reaffirming his commitment to eliminating the income tax.
