The “One Big Beautiful Bill” passed by House Republicans expands and makes permanent one of the most effective tax relief tools for working families: the standard deduction. This reform simplifies filing and lets more income stay in the hands of taxpayers.

Tax Simplification: Standard Deduction Made Permanent and Increased Through 2028

The current standard deduction, which was doubled in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and is now claimed by 90 percent of tax filers, is made permanent under the House bill.

And starting in 2025, the standard deduction will increase by $2,000 for married couples, $1,500 for heads of household, and $1,000 for single filers. These higher amount remains in place through 2028.

The Big Beautiful Bill passed by House Republicans expands the standard deduction for 2025 to $16,000 for single filers, $24,000 for heads of household, and $32,000 for married couples filing jointly.

The House Ways and Means Committee emphasized the importance of this provision, stating:

“This provision makes permanent the nearly doubled standard deduction created by the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. The provision further increases the standard deduction by including an extra year of inflation adjustment. Additionally, for tax years 2025 through 2028, this provision increases the standard deduction by an additional $1,000 for a single filer, $1,500 for head of household, and $2,000 for joint filers.”

Proven Benefits for Taxpayers

The standard deduction is one of the most straightforward tools for tax relief. It raises the amount of income that is not taxed, allowing more of what people earn to stay in their pockets. It also simplifies filing, as most Americans can skip itemizing deductions altogether.

The reform’s impact goes beyond dollars saved. According to the National Taxpayers Union Foundation, the expanded standard deduction has saved Americans approximately 210 million hours per year in tax compliance time.

That translates to around $13 billion in reduced compliance costs annually. When combined with the TCJA’s reduction in Alternative Minimum Tax filers, total annual savings rise to 345 million hours and more than $17 billion in costs avoided.
