Americans for Tax Reform commends Florida Candidate for Governor Byron Donalds for signing the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, a written commitment to the voters of Florida to oppose and veto any and all new tax increases.

Congressman Donalds makes the strongest possible public commitment that he will protect Florida taxpayers by signing the Pledge.

Donalds also signed the Congressional Taxpayer Protection Pledge in his successful run for Florida’s 19thCongressional District.

“In Congress and in the Florida statehouse, Byron Donalds has committed to defend Florida taxpayers and stayed strong in that commitment,” said Americans for Tax Reform President Grover Norquist. “Florida’s leadership as a no-income-tax state has been key in sparking a state tax cut revolution, with Rep. Donalds’ pledge, we can trust that he will continue to protect Florida’s economic freedom, prioritize affordability, and stop any effort to hike taxes.”

In Congress, Donalds has worked on the Unrealized Capital Gains Tax Bill, which would prohibit the implementation of new federal requirements to tax unrealized capital gains. He serves on the House Financial Services Committee. Donalds also served in the Florida House of Representatives from 2016 through 2020.

Donalds is a longtime supporter of school choice. According to his candidacy page, “Donalds led the effort to enact Hope Scholarships that empowered parents with school choice and passed a first-in-the-nation bill that allowed parents and community members to review instructional materials in schools.”

So far, Byron Donalds is the only gubernatorial candidate in Florida’s primary field to sign the Pledge.

Candidates often make campaign promises not to raise taxes, only to abandon taxpayers once elected. The Taxpayer Protection Pledge requires candidates to put their commitment in writing – making it harder to reverse course.

Americans for Tax Reform created the Taxpayer Protection Pledge in 1985 to solidify candidates’ commitments to taxpayers. President Reagan urged all candidates to sign the Pledge, campaigning for and praising candidates who did so. Today, over 1,400 elected officials and candidates on the federal and state levels are Taxpayer Protection Pledge signers.

New candidates sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge regularly. For the most up-to-date information on this race or any other, please visit the ATR Pledge Database.
